Westfields recorded their first Hellenic League Premier Division win of the season when they beat visitors Fairford Town 1-0 at allpay.park in the opening league match of the season.

The match, played in blistering temperatures with drinks breaks every 15 minutes, was a stop-start affair but Westfields won the tie with a 28th minute goal from Dan Stoneman who led the Fairford Town defence a merry dance throughout the game.

Stoneman was a constant threat to Fairford Town with his pacey runs down both wings as he interchanged at regular intervals.

On a beautifully prepared pitch Westfields took the lead with a fine interchange of passes between Adam Wakley and Josh Hunt which saw Stoneman finish in style with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Westfields then had a great chance to increase their lead when a similar passing movement put Josh Hunt through on goal but the Westfields leading striker fired wide of the upright.

After the break the visitors came more into the game and twice Ian Havard fielded long shots and then it looked like an equaliser was on the cards when Ross Langworthy was put through on goal but Ian Havard produced a fine full-length save to keep Westfields in front.

Westfields then had a number of other chances when a Matt MacDonald free-kick cleared the bar but it was the Westfields defence that stood firm as Fairford Town came back into the game in search of an equaliser but both Joe Davies and skipper Sam Rawlings made timely tackles.

Westfields produced a hard-working display in the heat to claim the 3 points.

Westfields now look forward to Tuesday night with a local derby against near-neighbours Hereford Pegasus, kick-off 7.45pm at allpay.park.
