WESTFIELDS PAY THE PENALTY

Westfields travelled to Thornbury on Saturday for the first meeting ever between the 2 sides and were held to a 1-1 draw in the Hellenic League Premier Division when Westfields missed a host of golden opportunities to have won handsomely, paid the penalty and had to settle for a point.

Westfields found themselves 1-0 down after 4 minutes when the home striker raced through to beat Ian Havard with a low shot and after that Westfields had a barrage of shots on the Thornbury goal before the interval without equalising.

Twin strikers Richard Greaves and Cawley Cox were both thwarted by the young Thornbury keeper Mackenzie Welsh who performed heroics in the home goal and then before half time Westfields dangerman Dan Stoneman missed a golden opportunity when he fired over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

Westfields were then lucky not to be 2-0 down before the break when the home striker raced through but with only Ian Havard to beat in the Westfields goal he pulled his shot wide of the far post.

After the break Westfields continued to dominate but chances went begging until Westfields equalised on the hour from the penalty spot after Harrison Summers was dragged down and Richard Greaves put Westfields level with a well-placed penalty.

Westfields then threw everything at the home goal but Welsh in the Thornbury goal performed heroics, saving brilliantly from a Sam Rawlings piledriver, and then a Richard Greaves header rattled the crossbar before Stoneman then had a golden opportunity and he pulled his shot wide of the far post.

Westfields really dominated play with a hard-working non-stop performance in an effort to gain all 3 points but stern defending by the home side blocked out any further opportunities that Westfields had and they had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

On Saturday Westfields travel to Coventry United in the FA Vase Second Round in the hope of gaining revenge from Coventry United who beat Westfields in the FA Cup this season 1-0 at allpay.park.

Then on Tuesday night Westfields make the short journey across the road to Edgar Street to play Hereford FC in the HFA County Senior Challenge Cup, kick-off 7.45pm at Edgar Street on Tuesday 23rd November.
