WESTFIELDS WIN BANK HOLIDAY DERBY

Westfields made their shortest trip ever to an away game with a walk to Hereford Lads Club where they came away with 3 valuable points after a hard-fought Hellenic League Premier Division derby yesterday.

Westfields deserved their 2-1 success as they battered Lads Club and hit the woodwork on 3 occasions during the game and if it was not for the agility of the Lads Club goalkeeper, Steve Bell, they may well have come home with a bigger score margin.

Both sides served up a hard-working performance in front of the 294 spectators and it was Westfields who showed the initial drive when good work down the left-hand side by Harrison Summers saw his cross hit by Dan Stoneman but it crashed against the crossbar and bounced free.

Lads Club’s efforts were reduced to long range which Ian Havard dealt with admirably.

After a goal-less first half the game opened up in Westfields’ favour when Dan Stoneman put over a good cross which Josh Hunt got on the end of and headed fiercely goal-wards and whilst the keeper got his hands to it the ball crossed the line to give Westfields the lead and Josh Hunt his first goal of the season.

Westfields came storming back and had a great chance to increase their lead when lively striker Harrison Summers was brought down in the Lads Club penalty area but Richard Greaves saw his penalty crash against the crossbar.

However, Westfields soon increased their lead when dangerman Stoneman again got free on the right and his powerful low shot was deflected over the line by a Lads Club defender.

Lads Club came back into the game in an end-to-end contest but Kane Kahaki, Joe Davies and Paul Hurrell were outstanding at the back for Westfields.

Right at the end of the game Lads Club pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after Harrison Summers had fouled the Lads Club striker in the penalty area and Adam Newbury scored a consolation goal for Lads Club.

Westfields deserved their 3 points in a keenly-contested local derby and move up to 12th in the league table.

Westfields now face Bradford Town on Saturday at allpay.park, kick-off 3pm, as they bid now to record their 3rd win of the season.
